Voices from the Field: Strengthening Social Justice Advocacy in the United States

Tue, 04/10/2007 - 1:30pm

The US Human Rights Fund is pleased to release its report, Voices from the Field: Strengthening Social Justice Advocacy in the United States. Conducted over six months in 2006, the report assesses the strengths, challenges and capacity needs of social justice and human rights organizations in the United States. During these months, a team of three consultants conducted interviews with the leaders of 38 nonprofit organizations, funders and other experts representing a broad cross-section of the social justice field. The field assessment focused in particular on four core capacities: communications, policy advocacy, human rights advocacy, and self-evaluation.

Voices from the Field is intended to inform the funding community’s efforts to build the capacity of US social justice organizations and support a growing human rights movement in the United States. It identifies cross-cutting needs and recommends field-wide strategies to address them. The report will also be useful to advocates who are using, or interested in using, human rights strategies to advance their work.

The US Human Rights Fund thanks The Atlantic Philanthropies for supporting this research, and especially all those who generously gave their time in lengthy interviews.
