Citizens for Second Chances and Juvenile Justice Project of Louisiana

Citizens for Second Chances (CFSC) is an organization of family members dedicated to giving hope to youth incarcerated for life by abolishing Juvenile Life Without Parole (JLWOP) in Louisiana, where an excess of 300 people are serving life sentences for crimes committed when they were under the age of eighteen.

The Juvenile Justice Project of Louisiana (JJPL) is a statewide legal and advocacy organization whose mission is to transform the juvenile justice system into one that builds on the strengths of young people, families and communities in order to instill hope and to ensure that children are given the greatest opportunities to grow and to thrive.

Project

In 2008, CFSC and JJPL joined forces to mount a campaign for the abolition of Juvenile Life Without Parole in Louisiana. The collaboration was built off of CFSC's existing foundation of support and the powerful voices and leadership of family members, as well as JJPL's expertise in running successful advocacy campaigns for legislative reform on juvenile justice issues in Louisiana.

Over the grant period, JJPL and CFSC will develop a legislative strategy to abolish JLWOP sentencing, as well as expand their related public education and coalition building efforts.  Program activities include integration of human rights into their advocacy strategy, media and communications work, and outreach to allied and other groups.
