American University Washington College of Law, Center for Human Rights & Humanitarian Law

As part of Washington College of Law's (WCL) long-standing commitment to international human rights and to the rule of law, WCL established the Center for Human Rights and Humanitarian Law in 1990 to work with students, faculty and the international legal community to provide scholarship and support for human rights initiatives around the world. The Center is dedicated to creating opportunities for students, practitioners and activists through training, complementary education, outreach, workshops & conferences, and research & publications. The Center for Human Rights and Humanitarian Law was founded in 1990 to provide a clearinghouse for the wide scope of activity at WCL concentrated on human rights and humanitarian law. Since its inception, students have always played an important role at the Center.

The Center has been an incubator for a variety of successful projects, many of which were started at the initiative of WCL students. Some of these projects have spun off to become independent programs. Today, programs such as the Academy for Human Rights and Humanitarian Law, the War Crimes Research Office, the Inter-American Human Rights Moot Court Competition, and the Human Rights Brief are among the core human rights projects at WCL.

Project

The U.S. Human Rights Fund supports the Center's "Advanced Training for Human Rights Practitioners in the United States" program. The Center will use this grant to convene experienced human rights trainers in a series of day-long trainings, which will rotate between Washington, New York, and San Francisco. The first training will focus on building strategies for cross-strategy, integrated campaigning, based on examples of international and domestic advocacy. Participants' needs and expressed priorities will determine the topical focus of subsequent trainings. Participants will also receive follow up support, via online technical assistance, webinars, and listserv access.
