American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan

The ACLU of Michigan enforces the Bill of Rights and civil rights laws through strategic issue campaigns that use the judicial system and legislature to promote progressive social policies that are consistent with their stated mission. The ACLU-M is led by a Board of Directors comprised of 36 members from across the state and Executive Director Kary Moss, who has served in this capacity for ten years. The ACLU-M is the only civil rights organization in the state to employ a full-time lobbyist in Lansing.

The ACLU of Michigan's mission remains realizing the promise of the Bill of Rights for all and expanding the reach of its guarantees to new areas. Through a variety of channels - public education, advocacy, organizing, and litigation - the ACLU is the premier civil rights organization in the U.S., earning widespread respect and admiration for its consistent defense of constitutionally based principles. The ACLU of Michigan is committed to supporting this message within their fair state.

Project

The ACLU-Michigan's project, Second Chances: Juvenile Services Life without Parole (JWLOP) seeks to conduct international advocacy, state policy, and communications/media work on ending life without parole for incarcerated youth in Michigan.

ACLU-M is engaged in advocacy efforts to educate policy and decision makers in Michigan about the need to eliminate life without parole sentences for juveniles.  The U.S. Human Rights Fund supports the ACLU-M to implement advocacy and public education activities around the elimination of JLWOP sentencing, including engaging the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights and state legislature on the issue.
