About the U.S. Human Rights Fund

The US Human Rights Fund (The Fund) is a strategic, field building initiative that aims to promote human rights in the United States and increase support for domestic human rights advocacy and organizing. Launched in July 2005, it uses a combination of grantmaking and educational programming to help address cross-cutting needs of the US human rights field and broaden knowledge of and support for this work.

USHRF is managed by Public Interest Projects, a 501(c)(3) public charity that operates grantmaking, technical assistance and strategic-planning programs for institutional and individual donors interested in social justice and human rights issues.

Mission

Its overall mission is to help build the base and capacity of active US human rights groups, strengthen their networks and communication, and advance key advocacy and conceptual initiatives. The Fund has identified its grantmaking priority areas as:

  • Human Rights Training and Education
  • Multi-issue and Cross-Sectoral Networks
  • Coordinated Communications and Shared Messaging
  • Strategic Thinking and Advocacy

USHRF also supports donor education on effective US human rights grantmaking including research and reports. In Summer 2007 the Fund released Voices From the Field: Building Capacity in the Social Justice and Human Rights Movements in the United States, a field assessment report on the core capacity needs of domestic civil and human rights organizations, and related funding strategies.
